The Women's Comprehensive Program at Cleveland State University has a Re-Entry Women's Project which helps women who have interrupted, delayed, or deferred their education. The Project includes academic and career counseling, financial aid information, and information about CLEP (College Level Examination Program), as well as a supportive environment for women. As part of the Project, three Brown Bag Lunches are scheduled for April 13 (12:15-1:15), April 21 (2:30-3:30), and April 27 (12:15-1:15), in Room 124, Corlett Building, 1935 Euclid Avenue. Perspectives on Women (GED 151) will be offered by Cleveland State University's Women's Comprehensive Program during Spring Quarter 1982. Although the course is offered for credit, all or part of the series can be attended without registration or commitment to the entire series. Appeals
PUAR (People United Against Repression) has an ongoing Legal Defense Fund to provide victims of police brutality with monetary assistance for both criminal and civil lawsuits. Eligibility is determined on a case by case basis. Presently, PUAR is handling the legal expenses involved in the class action suit stemming from the "suicides" by hanging in local area jails. We are requesting donations from all concerned individuals and organizations to help us maintain the Legal Defense Fund, so that we may continue to help others. The Gay Hotline needs women volunteers. In an effort to continue serving the community and update services, we are asking for women volunteers. Many women call who wish to talk with a woman, or a woman of color, and we don't have enough women for them to speak with. Training for new volunteers consists of four classes, an interview and on-thejob training with a senior volunteer. Women Together, Inc., operator of a shelter for battered women that houses approximately 200 women and 400 children per year, has a new volunteer program called "Sponsorship". Volunteer sponsors are assigned women who call the hotline and shelter residents upon their departure. Volunteers accompany clients to groups for abused women and help provide emotional support. The Women's Writer's Center is beginning its 8th year, offering study in. an environment which deals in feminist theory and which places the writing in historical and political continuity, envisioning the future. Displaced Homemakers (women who have lost the support they were dependent upon) can get help through the Displaced Homemakers Program at all campuses of Cuyahoga Community College. The program offers services to help women become “job ready" and self-supporting. No fees are charged. To be eligible, a woman must have worked without pay as a homemaker for her family, not been gainfully employed, and be at least 35 years old. Courses include how to find and keep a job, interviewing, community resources, and budgeting. Women in Skilled Employment (WISE) is a program at Women Space aimed at increasing opportunities for women in non-traditional jobs. On Our Own, an independent production company in Columbus interested in promoting the various talents of women in the visual and performing arts, is planning an evening of non-profit entertainment with an anticipated date set for mid-May. They need poetry and short writing that will be produced into a play, plus people who would like to exhibit their art, crafts and/or photography, and of course, performers and volunteers. Interested in journalism or helping to serve the gay community? High Gear is in need of reporters, writers, and layout workers. Classes will be held for those interested in working on the newspaper.
WomenSpace Helpline will be offering women a volunteer training program in counseling, advocacy and community referral beginning Saturday, April 3. Helpline volunteers will have the opportunity to learn new skills, work in a supportive environment, and provide critical community services for women in the Cleveland area. The WomenSpace Helpline operates weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It provides emotional support and makes referrals to agencies dealing with women's problems, including divorce, discrimination, abuse, and health care. The Volunteer Projects component of Women Together, Inc. is conducting an on-going volunteer recruitment campaign to better serve battered women. Women Together needs volunteers in the areas of childcare, crisis-line phone service, support group facilitation, direct service counseling, and public speaking. Requirements are that volunteers be sensitive to the needs of women, particularly battered women. Experience is helpful, but not mandatory. We offer training in each area of service.
